India is facing a shortage of commercial LPG cylinders due to global supply disruptions linked to the West Asia conflict and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for LPG imports.
LPG Cylinder Crisis Live Updates: For the third consecutive day on Wednesday, a shortage of commercial LPG cylinders continued to disrupt restaurants, hotels and some transport services in several Indian cities. The disruption comes as the Centre has prioritised domestic cooking gas supply due to global energy uncertainties linked to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. The shortage has been reported in cities including Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata. Restaurant associations say the supply of commercial cylinders has become irregular over the past few days, making it difficult for eateries to operate normally.
In response to the situation, the Union government has invoked the Essential Commodities Act to prioritise LPG supply for households, hospitals and other essential services. In some areas, the distribution of commercial cylinders has been limited. Authorities have also extended the gap between two domestic LPG bookings from 21 days to 25 days to prevent hoarding. At the same time, refineries have been directed to increase LPG production in an effort to stabilise supply.
Industry groups have cautioned that if the supply disruption continues, restaurants and hotels in several cities could face serious operational challenges. They also warned that food prices may rise in the coming weeks if the shortage persists.
