Over 190 opposition MPs have signed a notice demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over charges of partisan conduct.
In a first-of-its-kind move in Indian politics, opposition MPs have signed a notice demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. He has been accused of working in favor of the ruling BJP. This is the first time that such a notice has been filed against a CEC in India. But can he actually be removed? Let’s break it down in simple words.
A total of 130 Lok Sabha MPs and 63 Rajya Sabha MPs have signed a notice seeking the removal of CEC Gyanesh Kumar. The notice is expected to be submitted in at least one House of Parliament on Friday. Under the rules, at least 100 MPs in the Lok Sabha and 50 in the Rajya Sabha are required to move such a notice, and the opposition has exceeded both numbers.
An opposition leader said MPs showed “great enthusiasm” in signing the notice, with many coming forward even after the required numbers had already been met. The notice has been signed by members from all INDIA bloc parties, including AAP, which is no longer officially part of the alliance.
