Srinagar: Veteran Jammu & Kashmir National Conference president Dr. Farooq Abdullah escaped unharmed from a brazen assassination attempt late Wednesday evening at a high-profile wedding in Jammu’s Greater Kailash area, marking the latest in a string of threats against the 88-year-old leader.
The incident occurred at Royal Park during the marriage ceremony of a party affiliate’s son, attended by Abdullah, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, and Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Sogami. Eyewitnesses and police reports describe how 63-year-old Kamal Singh Jamwal from Purani Mandi, Jammu, approached Abdullah at point-blank range and fired a single shot from his licensed .32 bore pistol. The bullet missed, reportedly deflected by quick action from Abdullah’s security detail.
Jammu and Kashmir Police and National Security Guard (NSG) personnel – part of Abdullah’s Z-Plus protection cover, the highest civilian security tier in India – immediately intervened.
