Restoration work intensified on Mount-Poonamallee Road after flyover collapse; traffic diverted, investigation underway, one motorcyclist killed.
Restoration work has been intensified on Mount-Poonamallee Road following the collapse of girders from the flyover being constructed under the Chennai Metro Rail’s phase II corridor at Manapakkam, said police on Friday (June 13, 2025).
Two I-girders that had been erected a week ago near the L&T Head office main gate in Manapakkam collapsed unexpectedly when one of its supporting A-frames gave way. CMRL contractors are removing the debris on war footing basis to restore traffic movement in the road and investigation would be conducted to ascertain the cause of the collapse, the CMRL said in a statement.
One motorcyclist was killed. Police said the deceased has been identified as Ramesh, 40 of Kattupakkam. Nandambakkam Police registered a case and further investigation is on.
Meanwhile, the Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) said road engineering works have been intensified and restoration work is on. The GCTP also diverted traffic as well in this stretch. However, there is no change in traffic movement from Porur to St Thomas Mount.
It said only outgoing traffic has been diverted via Manapakkam, Mugalivakkam, Kolapakkam and Porur to reach the destinations. From Nandambakkam bridge towards Porur, light vehicles are being permitted and heavy vehicles are being diverted normally. “We expect heavy vehicles to pass through in two hours in the stretch,” said a traffic police officer.
