Chennai Book Fair 2025 is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. on December 27, 2024. Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin and School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi will inaugurate the 48th edition of the book fair.
According to a press release, the book fair — usually held mid-January every year — will go on for 17 days at YMCA Grounds, Nandanam, concluding on January 12, 2025. According to S.K Murugan, secretary of Booksellers and Publishers Association of South India (Bapasi), the move to advance the schedule was taken on account of the Pongal festival in January, owing to which the footfall may be low as many people would leave for their hometowns. “The book fair will be held on holidays too, from 11 a.m to 8.30 p.m,” the press release added.
A total of 900 halls will be set up with 10% discount on all books at all venues. Stalls will be set up by 10 government departments, including the Tamil Nadu Textbook and Educational Services Corporation. The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department will also set up a stall for the first time.
Other publishers, including Penguin, Random House India, HarperCollins Publishers India, Simon & Schuster India, along with the American Consulate and British Council, will also participate in the fair.
Free tickets will be distributed to school and college students to encourage the habit of reading. Speech and other competitions for students will be held at the book fair.
