As many as 64 villages in Coimbatore district have been declared free from tobacco, thanks to the efforts of various departments, including the Health department, of Tamil Nadu.
M. Saranya Devi, district consultant of the tobacco control cell, said the initiative to identify the villages with no sale and consumption of tobacco products began in 2023.
The drive ensured that all village panchayats had passed resolutions against the sale of tobacco products at gram sabha meetings. A tobacco control ambassador designated by the president was appointed, and two tobacco control activities were also organised every six months. The Health department organised pledge-taking events, where villagers committed to abstaining from the sale and use of tobacco products.
The teams also ensured that there was no sale of banned or unbanned tobacco products.
