Trinamool Congress leaders have filed multiple police complaints against BJP MP John Barla for demanding a separate State or Union Territory status for north Bengal. Complaints were filed at three police stations in Cooch Behar and adjoining districts of north Bengal, alleging that the remarks by the MP had led to a law and order situation in the State. The remarks by Mr. Barla, who represents the Alipurduar constituency, have triggered strong political reactions.
In , the grape capital of India and host of the Simhastha Kumbh Mela every 12 years, environmental concerns over a plan to cut 1,800 trees for the proposed Sadhugram project in the historic Tapovan area have sharpened political fault lines ahead of local body elections.
