Tiruchi Corporation will take steps to collect dues from tax defaulters to bridge the deficit in its Budget 2025-26, said Mayor M. Anbazhagan during a discussion on the Corporation Budget for the financial year 2025-26 on Friday.
The budget projects the civic body’s total revenue at ₹1,308.16 crore and expenditure at ₹1,437.11 crore, leaving a deficit of ₹128.95 crore.
“Steps are being taken to collect the dues from owners who have defaulted on paying property tax or have under-assessed properties. Steps to improve the non-tax revenue will be undertaken,” said Mr. Anbazhagan. About 13,000 properties which were under domestic category are being used for commercial purposes without proper tax assessments.
The upcoming integrated bus terminal (IBT), truck terminal, multiutility facility centre, and vegetable market at Panjapur will generate about ₹100 crore in revenue, increasing the Corporation’s source of revenue, he said.
Councillors of various political parties welcomed the budget. S. Suresh, representing Ward 33, highlighted the need for more overhead water storage tanks. He requested the civic body to give importance to the essential needs of the public instead of spending on beautification work.
V. Jawahar, Councillor of Ward 2, said that about 9 km, including Chithirai Veedhi, Uthira Veedhi and other streets in Srirangam, had no underground drainage connection and should be included in the Phase V project. He demanded steps to redevelop the damaged roads in the ward and urged the civic body to hire more sanitation workers to address the shortage.
K. Suresh Kumar, Councillor of Ward 23, sought a dedicated vendor street to protect the livelihood of the street vendors in the city.
