Government hospitals provide free Factor 8 injections for safe childbirth and treatment of haemophilia patients, ensuring successful outcomes.
A haemophilia affected woman safely gave birth to a child at Government Lady Goshen Hospital here after getting the required ‘Factor 8’ injections, while a six-year-old boy was treated for ‘haemophilia with inhibitor’ and was successfully operated upon at the Government Wenlock Hospital after he fell from a building, according to government doctors.
Apart from this, a 14-year-old child is being treated by a paediatric surgeon for haemophilia at the Government Wenlock Hospital, the doctors said.
Haemophilia is a serious blood bleeding disorder caused by the deficiency of blood clotting factors namely Factor 8 and Factor 9 proteins. It leads to spontaneous bleeding episodes. Severe Haemophilia A is managed with repeated factor VIII replacement or haemostatic products that stop or prevent bleeding. Government provides these factors at free of cost to patients admitted at the government hospitals.
In a press release, Superintendent of Lady Goschen Hospital, Durgaprasad said the woman, who was undergoing treatment for Haemophilia, got married. When she got pregnant, the hospital doctors counselled her wherein she was explained about the risk to her life at the time of delivery. When she expressed her willingness to deliver the child, the hospital contacted Sharath Kumar, the head of Regional Blood Transfusion Centre of Government Wenlock Hospital.
After taking permission of the State government, Dr. Kumar provided through the Centre free ‘Factor 8’ injection, which was given to her every week from the time she was tested pregnant. Twenty day before the scheduled date of delivery, the woman was admitted in the hospital. By keeping adequate stock of ‘Factor 8’ injection, a team of doctors conducted caesarean section. The woman safely gave birth to the child and both are safe. As much as 25,000 units of ‘Factor 8’ injection was given to the woman, Dr. Durgaprasad said.
Similarly adequate amount of ‘Factor 7’ injection was arranged by the Centre that enabled a team of surgeons of Wenlock Hospital to immediately perform surgery on the six year old boy, who was injured following a fall from the seventh floor of a building. The team of surgeons performed this rare life saving surgery within four hours of admission to the hospital on May 3 night, said Wenlock Hospital Superintendent D.S. Shivaprakash.
Dr. Shivaprakash said two students each have successfully completed the DNB speciality course in ‘Immunohematology and Blood Transfusion’ and the DNB super speciality course in ‘Urology’ in the hospital respectively, which were started in 2021. The hospital is better equipped to handle cases related to patients suffering from genetic blood disorders, Dr. Shivaprakash said.
