Renowned paediatric ophthalmologist and Vice Chairman of Sankara Nethralaya T. S. Surendran was conferred with the Charaka Award on Wednesday by the Rotary Club of Guindy.
The award was presented to him at an event here in recognition of his yeomen service in the field of medicine and long years of service to mankind. He has conducted many special camps for treating squints and has performed thousands of surgeries and procedures, most of them on children.
In his speech, Dr. Surendran stressed the need for parents taking their children for annual eye check-ups. Refractive errors like myopia and short-sightedness have become very common, he said. Speaking from the experience of running the hospital, he said capacity building was necessary for the proper functioning of any institution, especially hospitals.
Lieutenant General A. Arun, General Officer Commanding, Dakshin Bharat Area, Indian Army, who presented the award, appreciated the doctor and Sankara Nethralaya for providing free treatment to army personnel and their families.
Mothish Kumar, president, Rotary Club of Guindy, said this was the ninth year the award was being presented by the 27-year-old club that provides community services in health-related areas.
