M.K. Stalin inaugurates long-awaited road overbridge in Madurai connecting key areas after 19 years.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Thursday inaugurated the road overbridge connecting Palanganatham, TVS Nagar and Jaihindpuram via video conference. The project which was sanctioned in 2006 was finally completed in 2025, after 19 long years.
Minister for Commercial Taxes and Registration P. Moorthy visited the road overbridge after the inauguration along with Collector M.S. Sangeetha, Corporation Commissioner Chitra Vijayan, MLA M. Boominathan and other officials.
The construction of the road overbridge was sanctioned in 2006 at an estimated cost of ₹30 crore. The works began after five years in 2011 at an estimated cost of ₹33 crore. In 2015, the construction of the bridge connecting Madakulam and TVS Nagar along with a limited use subway was completed.
However, the construction of the second arm of Madakulam - TVS Nagar road overbridge towards Jaihindpuram was suspended. The project was caught in a legal quagmire with some residents of Jaihindpuram filing petitions moving the court over land acquisition. Hence the construction had to be suspended.
After the long legal battle was settled, NABARD and Rural Roads Wing of the State Highways acquired the land to construct the arm along with an approach road and service roads on both sides.
In November 2022, the construction of the second arm towards Jaihindpuram was inaugurated by Minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan. The work was completed on April 30 at a cost of ₹18.37 crore. The bridge with 47 piers and 51 spans has been constructed for 730 metres with subway, service roads and stormwater drainage channel.
This will connect the western regions such as Palanganatham, Tirupparankundram and Kalavasal with the eastern regions like TVS Nagar, Jaihindpuram, Villapuram, Avaniapuram and Madurai airport. It will reduce traffic congestion on many arterial roads and people will be able to reach their destinations on time.
