Search for 20-year-old Vikas in Yamuna continues into third day as Rescue Boat Club takes over operations.
The search and rescue operation for a 20-year-old youth from Noida, identified as Vikas, who was swept away by a strong current at the Yamuna riverbank in Mayur Vihar on Saturday, remained unsuccessful for the third successive day.
Teams from the Uttar Pradesh State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were pressed into service on Sunday and conducted a nearly 12-hour search. However, with efforts yielding no results, the teams called off the operation. The search is now being carried out by the Rescue Boat Club team.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening. Soon after, the Mayur Vihar police station received information from the Uttar Pradesh police about a man swept away in a canal that feeds into the Yamuna.
According to the police, a group of eight to ten people from Sector 5 of Harola in Noida travelled to the Yamuna riverbank for idol immersion. Four of them entered the canal and three managed to return safely. Vikas, though, was unable to withstand the strong currents.
Following the incident, the Uttar Pradesh SDRF, NDRF, fire brigade and ambulance services were alerted to intensify the rescue operation.
While the SDRF and NDRF teams have shut their operations, the Rescue Boat Club continues the search. Harish, the in-charge of the club, said a team of 14 divers and four motorboats is conducting a 12-hour-long operation.
