Seamless road connectivity to international airport coming up at Bhogapuram need of the hour, say stakeholders. With the airport expected to come into operation by June 2026, the coastal corridor road project proposed earlier needs to be taken forward, they insist.
Seamless road connectivity from Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram to the international airport coming up at Bhogapuram is the need of the hour, insist stakeholders.
Tentatively, the airport is expected to come into operation by June 2026, and about 71% of the work has been completed with the government actively pursuing the project’s progress.
According to Union Minister for Civil Aviation K. Rammohan Naidu, 97% work on the runway has already been completed. Works pertaining to the taxiway and terminal building are being taken up on a war-footing basis to meet the deadline.
The government had earlier proposed a coastal corridor road between Visakhapatnam and Bhogapuram, and construction of 12 flyovers at various places in Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram as per the master plan to minimise the travel time for the travellers. Mr. Rammohan Naidu has promised to take it up with the Union Ministers concerned as it involves various departments.
The government needs to focus on the coastal corridor road as it enables thousands of air passengers reach the Bhogapuram airport in a hassle-free manner, says Tours and Travels Association of Andhra chairman O. Naresh.
“The time taken to travel by road will be more than that of travel by air if dedicated road connectivity is not created,” he says. People, especially executives working in several companies located in the Gajuwaka area in Visakhapatnam, need to travel 70 km to reach the Bhogapuram airport, and seamless road connectivity is, therefore, essential, he reasons.
Andhra Pradesh Air Travellers’ Associations president K. Kumar Raja and vice-president D.S. Varma have submitted a charter of requirements to the government. They want the government to develop a road on the lines of the P.V. Narasimha Rao Expressway provided to the Shamshabad international airport in Hyderabad.
