New Superintendents of Police in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts vow to crack down on crime and communal elements.
K. Arun and Hariram Shankar took charge as the Superintendents of Police of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, respectively, at Mangaluru and Udupi on Friday.
They were among the few IPS officers transferred by the government on Thursday to contain the increasing crimes fomented by communal elements in the region. Dr. Arun, who was the SP of Udupi, was transferred to Dakshina Kannada, and Mr. Shankar was the SP of Intelligence at the State Police headquarters before he was transferred to Udupi.
The new district police heads, after assuming office, assured that they would act tough on criminals, particularly communal elements, including those involved in moral policing. The SPs appealed to the public to share information about crimes directly with them.
In a statement, Dr. Arun said that priority would be given to maintaining law and order and containing crimes in the district. Serious action would be taken against perpetrators of communal crimes and moral policing.
Stringent action would be initiated against those spreading false information on social media platforms, illegal cow transport and slaughtering, drug peddling, illegal mining, gambling, betting and other criminal activities. People with information regarding such crimes may share it directly with him over his mobile number, 9480805301, or landline number, 0824-2220503, Dr. Arun said.
Meanwhile, soon after taking charge, Mr. Shankar urged residents of the Udupi district not to engage in spreading communal hatred. He asked them to share any information about such activities with him. The priority would be to contain communal crimes and other illegal activities.
Mr. Shankar said that his predecessor, Dr. Arun, had introduced a strong system to contain criminal activities in the district, and he would continue it.
