Chief Minister Fadnavis witnesses Mumbai Metro Line 7A tunnel breakthrough, connecting Andheri East to Chhatrapati Shivaji Airport Terminal 2.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday (April 17, 2025) witnessed a significant milestone when the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) deployed for Mumbai Metro Line 7A, achieved a breakthrough. This is the first tunnel breakthrough by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) for an underground metro project in Mumbai.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inspected the “Downline Tunnel Breakthrough” and reviewed the progress of the metro line in Mumbai’s Vile Parle area. “The TBM successfully completed the breakthrough of the tunnel today, passing under the elevated roads above Metro Line 3, crossing major sewage channels and water channels,” said Mr. Fadnavis.
Line 7A, connecting Andheri East to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Terminal 2, was constructed using a dual-mode hard rock TBM. The tunnelling work of Line 7A began over two years ago, TBM machine was lowered 30 meters underground in September 2023.
The length of this metro line is 3.4 kilometres, of which 0.94 kilometres is elevated and 2.50 kilometres is underground. The diameter of the tunnel is 6.35 meters and specially designed precast rings have been used in six areas. This tunnel will be between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport station and Airport Colony station.
The breakthrough is significant as it has encountered geological conditions and faced several challenges, including sharp gradients. “The breakthrough of this tunnel was completed by overcoming various difficulties by crossing major sewage channels and water channels. With this metro line, Mumbaikars will be able to experience a comfortable journey from Colaba to Vasai Virar, Mira Bhayandar,” mentioned the Chief Minister office statement.
Metro line will provide connectivity to the international airport from Mira Bhayandar (Metro Line 9) area and Western Suburb a (Metro Line 2A and Metro Line 7), once operational.
