Erakudi bus stand lacks public toilet, inconveniencing daily commuters, especially women and children; proposal for facility under consideration.
The absence of a public toilet at the Erakudi bus stand in Uppilliyapuram block, Thuraiyur taluk, has caused inconvenience to daily commuters, particularly women and children.
Erakudi serves as a crucial transit point between Thuraiyur, Uppilliyapuram, and Puliyancholai, with several hundred passengers using the facility daily. Commuters from at least seven neighbouring panchayats rely on this stop to access buses heading to Tiruchi, Namakkal, and Musiri.
In addition to government-operated services, private mini buses connect Erakudi to Uppiliyapuram, Thuraiyur, and Musiri, halting at the Mariamman temple junction multiple times a day. Buses running between Namakkal and Thuraiyur, as well as Namakkal and Musiri, also pass through this stop nearly ten times daily.
The location’s importance is further underscored by the presence of essential services such as a Primary Health Centre and a bank, drawing people from surrounding villages. Erakudi also hosts a bustling Sunday market that attracts large crowds.
Despite this footfall, the lack of a public toilet remains a glaring omission. “The absence of even a basic toilet facility at the bus stand has become a daily hardship, especially for women,” said D. Muthukumar, a member of the CPI(M) from the Erakudi unit.
An official from the Block Development Office said a proposal to establish a public toilet at the site was under consideration.

The draft policy for “Responsible Digital Use Among Students”, released on Monday by the Department of Health and Family Welfare, has recommended that parents set structured routines with clear screen-time rules and prioritise privacy, safety, and open conversation with children on digital well-being.
