Alappuzha district sees 77.36% voter turnout in Kerala Assembly polls 2026, surpassing 2021 figures amid technical issues.
The Alappuzha district, which grabbed attention after CPI(M) dissident G. Sudhakaran announced his candidacy as an Independent for the Ambalappuzha constituency, recorded 77.36% of polling as voting concluded on Thursday.
The voter turnout marked a significant increase from the 74.68% recorded in the previous Assembly elections in 2021, in tune with the brisk polling reported from across the State. The final tally was yet to be declared as the data from polling booths were still being processed around 9 p.m.
A traditional strong fort of the Left Democratic Front (LDF), eight of the nine constituencies in the district are held by the CPI(M)-led alliance in the current Assembly.
Four segments witnessed a turnout of over 80% this time while the remaining five recorded a polling percentage of above 70%. The Aroor constituency recorded the highest turnout of 83.23%, followed by Cherthala (81.97%) and Alappuzha (81.23%). While Aroor and Alappuzha saw slight increase in polling percentage from 2021 (82.58% and 78.43% respectively), the figure for Cherthala dipped from 83.8% of 2021.
In Ambalapuzha, where Mr. Sudhakaran, backed by the United Democratic Front(UDF), took on incumbent H. Salam of the CPI(M), a voter turnout of 80.58% was recorded, in a sharp increase from 76.82% five years ago.
Haripad, the lone constituency held by the UDF in the district, the polling percentage stood at 76.82%, close to 76.6% in 2021. Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala, who has been holding the seat since 2011, sought re-election from there against CPI’s T.T. Jismon and BJP’s Sandeep Vachaspathi.

Upgrading of the railway station in Mandya into a ‘world-class facility’, establishing an additional railway station at Maddur and construction of overbridges and underpasses at level crossings along the Bengaluru-Mandya-Mysuru railway sections came under focus during a window-trailing inspection by Union Ministers H.D. Kumaraswamy and V. Somanna on Thursday.
