Kerala records turnout of 78.23% in high-stakes election

Kerala Assembly elections saw a voter turnout of 78.03%, with female voters leading at 80.86%.
Kerala recorded 78.23% polling in the Assembly elections held on Thursday (April 9, 2026) after what has been a short but intense period of electioneering in the State. According to the Election Commission of India (EC), 80.86% of female voters, 75.01% of male voters, and 57.04% of transgender voters in Kerala cast their votes.

Voters in Kerala must now wait till May 4 for the polled votes to be counted and the results declared in the 140 constituencies. Leaders of all the three fronts — the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Democratic Front, Congress-led United Democratic Front, and the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance — exuded confidence about the outcome.
After voting ended, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, in a Facebook post, thanked voters and government officials for ensuring that the exercise was conducted in a peaceful manner.

Thursday’s (April 9) voter turnout was higher than that of the 2021 Assembly elections and the highest since the 1987 Assembly polls (80.54%). But it failed to live up to the expectations of the ECI, which had set a target of 85%. Kerala recorded its highest polling percentage in an Assembly election in the 1960 polls, when it stood at 85.72%.

Upgrading of the railway station in Mandya into a ‘world-class facility’, establishing an additional railway station at Maddur and construction of overbridges and underpasses at level crossings along the Bengaluru-Mandya-Mysuru railway sections came under focus during a window-trailing inspection by Union Ministers H.D. Kumaraswamy and V. Somanna on Thursday.
