IMD issues heavy rainfall forecast for South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema on May 20 and 21.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Amaravati, on May Monday, issued a special bulletin with a forecast of heavy rainfall for South Coastal Andhra Pradesh (SCAP) and Rayalaseema on May 20 and 21.
The special bulletin said heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in the districts of Tirupati, Chittoor, SPSR Nellore, YSR Kadapa, Annamayya, Sri Sathya Sai, Anantapur, Kurnool, Nandyal on May 20. Similarly, a heavy rainfall forecast has been given for the districts of Anantapur, Annamayya, Sri Sathya sai, Chittoor Kurnool, Nandyal on May 21.
The IMD said rain may be accompanied with gusty winds with speed of 50 to 60 kmph. A yellow alert has been issued for the region for the next two days. Thereafter, the State may continue to see thunderstorms until May 23.
The IMD also listed down a few steps to be taken to stay safe, including unplugging electrical/electronic appliances during heavy rain, not taking shelter under trees, poles, keeping away from water bodies, electric poles, wires, suspending farming operations, among others. The IMD also listed down the impact that is expected during the three days of rain in the two regions.
According to the IMD, factors influencing the weather in the State include the upper air cyclonic circulation over southwest and southeast Bay of Bengal, which now lies over westcentral Bay and southwest Bay of Bengal between 1.5 and 5.8 km above mean sea level and a trough that runs across southeast Bay of Bengal to North Interior Karnataka. There was another trough that runs from cyclonic circulation over Maharashtra to Rayalaseema across North Interior Karnataka at 0.9 km above mean sea level.
On Monday, though an orange alert was issued for isolated places in the south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema, the region did not record very heavy rainfall.
A few places in Prakasam, YSR Kadapa, Tirupati recorded light to moderate rainfall, according to realtime rainfall information provided by the A.P. State Development and Planning Society as of 9 p.m. The highest rainfall of 41 mm was recorded in Alluri Sitarama Raju district, followd by Parvatipuram Manyam and Prakasam.
