Madurai City Police Commissioner distributes helmets to enforce road safety rules, emphasizing the importance of wearing helmets.
Madurai City Commissioner of Police J. Loganathan on Friday distributed helmets to police personnel and Home Guards in Madurai as part of a road safety awareness drive.
Speaking on the occasion, he emphasised the importance of wearing helmets and following road safety rules. As part of the first phase of the awareness programme a total of 500 helmets were distributed to the police personnel and Home Guards. Being the enforcement agencies, they should set an example to the people in following the law, he said.
A total of 3,000 helmets would be distributed as part of the road safety awareness campaign, he said, adding that the remaining 2,500 helmets would be distributed next month to Corporation staff and the general public. The main objective of this campaign was to create awareness among the public of the importance of wearing helmets and following road safety rules, he said.
Two-wheeler riders should mandatorily wear helmets. The pillion riders should also wear helmets to protect themselves. Though there were road safety rules in place and the authorities were taking necessary steps to prevent road accidents, they still took place due to several reasons, he said.
“Wearing a helmet prevents head injuries. One can get injured in any part of the body and recover, but a head injury can be fatal. In order to avoid this, people should wear helmets and follow road safety rules,” he said, adding that the public should be careful and choose their helmets properly. Not just any helmet will do, but a quality helmet that meets the safety standards should be chosen, the Police Commissioner said.
