GTTCs in Karnataka achieve 100% placement of students

Dr. Sharan Prakash Patil, Minister for Medical Education and Skill Development, pointed out this achievement is significant when there are more than 200 engineering colleges across Karnataka with a placement rate of less than 20%. There are 271 ITI colleges where the placement rate varies from 30% to 40%. Karnataka has more than 100 polytechnic colleges where the placement rate is less than 20%.

With more emphasis on skills, the Government Tool Room & Training Centres (GTTCs) have achieved 100% placement in the year 2024-25.

There are 33 GTTCs across Karnataka, most of which are in taluk centers. A large number of students from rural areas enrol in these centres. “All 3,000 students trained in these centers in 2024-25 have been successful in getting jobs in various industries,” Dr. Sharan Prakash Patil, Minister for Medical Education and Skill Development, told The Hindu.

In this context, to facilitate employment for more students, the government of Karnataka has enhanced the intake in GTTCs from 3,000 to 5,000 for the academic year 2025-26. And, in addition to the existing six courses, steps have been taken to introduce three additional courses. Three more GTTCs are also expected to be started soon.

“GTTC is teaching three-year diploma and short-term courses in which 60% is hands-on training while 40% is theory. In addition, there is a one-year internship with industry. This helps students acquire skills as per the requirements of industries. There is a huge demand in the manufacturing sector,” explained Dr. Patil.

“In addition, ‘Training while Learning’ module has also been implemented. Soft skill training is provided in multinational companies, including Microsoft, when the students are in their final semester,” he stated.

The main reason for not getting placement is that the candidates do not have the skills required by the industry, he said.
