A grand library to be established by the State government in Tirunelveli will be named after yesteryear leader of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) Quaid-E-Millath, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced in Tiruchi on Friday.

Inaugurating the ninth World Islamic Tamil Literature conference organised by the Islamic Literary Society, Mr.Stalin conceded another demand, raised at the conference, to establish a chair on Islamic Tamil literature in University of Madras. “I assure you all steps will be taken to establish the chair,” he said.

The DMK government, Mr. Stalin said, had always been a “protective rampart” for the minorities and continues to raise its voice to protect their rights. “You all know how much concern I and the DMK have for the minorities. This has been a long-standing relationship. The DMK government has not only been a protective rampart but has always been in the forefront in protecting your rights and extending benefits to you,” he said.

Over the past four years, the DMK government had been implementing various welfare schemes for the socio economic and educational development of minorities. The recent government decision to establish a Haj House at Nanganallur in Chennai has been largely welcomed.

Commending the motto of the conference, ‘Integration through literature,” Mr. Stalin said integration was the need of the hour. “Integration is essential not only in literature but also for hearts. Such conferences will foster such integration. Tamil and literature will unite us,” he said.

Mr. Stalin showered praised on the IUML national president K.M. Kader Mohideen on whom he conferred the Umaru Pulavar Award on the occasion. “Mr. Kader Mohideen was a close friend of Kalaignar (former Chief Minister Karunanidhi) and he is one of my guides. He always thinks of the welfare of society and the State,” Mr. Stalin said.

Mr. Stalin presented the Kalvikko Award to S. Sathik, former Vice-Chancellor of University of Madras on the occasion, and Ilakkiya Kavalar Awards to 10 persons.
