Game, grit and glory: Hyderabad hosts biggest arena polo showdown

World Arena Polo Championship begins at Hyderabad Polo and Riding Club with record international participation and level playing field.

The grandest-ever arena polo event kicked off at the Hyderabad Polo and Riding Club as the World Arena Polo Championship officially began with the draw of lots on Monday. Adviser (Sports) to Telangana government, A.P. Jitender Reddy, who conducted the draw, called it a dream come true for the State to host such a prestigious tournament.

Chaitania R. Kumar, founder-president of HPRC and the driving force behind the event, couldn’t hide his excitement. With eight foreign teams — the highest international participation yet — the championship boasts some of the biggest names in the sport, often hailed as the “king of all games”.

“It is never easy to host a polo event of this magnitude. First, we had to get our act together including ensuring that international facilities are put in place for it. Thankfully, we were successful in creating a near-perfect ambience for this world event with the entire team of HPRC, including secretary Reaz Ahmed, and vice-president Vijendra Singh being at the forefront,” Mr. Chaitania said.

A record 60 horses were assigned to teams through a draw of lots, ensuring a level playing field for all competitors. The championship features intense competition across two main events — the Galaxy Cup (four-goal handicap) and the Telangana Tourism Cup (eight-goal handicap) — along with the Best of Best exhibition match and an all-ladies exhibition match on February 28.

Adding to the celebrations, HPRC marks its 20th anniversary this year, having been established in 2005.

For his part, Vishal Chauhan, who will be spearheading the Indian challenge here, complimented the HPRC chief and his team’s efforts in hosting the event. “We are looking forward to this phenomenal tournament,” he said.

The fact that all foreign players were equally impressed with the facilities and hospitality speaks volumes about HPRC’s meticulous planning of the event. “We hope by conducting this event, the sport will get a major fillip,” said Mr. Ahmed.
