Four-lane Nolambur bridge over Cooum to be completed by February-end

Nolambur's four-lane bridge over the Cooum River, costing ₹4.51 crore, is set to enhance connectivity by February-end.

The 160-metre-long four-lane bridge across the Cooum River at Nolambur, connecting Poonamallee High Road and Union Road, is scheduled to be completed by the end of February after legal hurdles affecting the project were cleared, according to the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran.

The project is expected to be implemented at a cost of ₹4.51 crore. An official in the GCC’s Bus Route Roads Department said construction has reached the final stage, with limited deck-laying work remaining.

The bridge has been planned to improve connectivity mainly for residents of Nolambur, Mogappair West, Vanagaram, and Maduravoyal. At present, commuters in these neighbourhoods rely on narrow crossings to reach Poonamallee High Road, leading to congestion at junctions, especially during peak hours.

Motorists travelling between the Poonamallee-Avadi stretch and the Ambattur-Mogappair belt often experience delays due to the lack of a continuous corridor.

Once completed, the four-lane bridge is expected to provide a direct link between the two arterial roads, easing pressure on existing crossings and improving traffic flow.

An official said the bridge has been designed to accommodate future traffic growth while complying with flood-management and river-protection norms. Given the Cooum’s history of flooding during heavy monsoon spells, river-training measures and reinforced embankments have been incorporated as part of the project.
