Eid-ul-Fitr celebrated in Madurai with prayers, charity, and togetherness, including distributing food, clothes, and gifts to the needy.
Eid-ul-Fitr was celebrated with religious fervour in Madurai district on Monday. Muslims in large numbers gathered at the Idgah grounds and offered special prayers.
Eid-ul-Fitr marks the end of the month-long fasting during the month of Ramadan. People gathered at the Idgah grounds, offered special prayers and shared greetings with each other.
Later, they exchanged sweets and gifts with friends and relatives. They also distributed essential commodities, food and new clothes to the needy people so that they do not go hungry on the occasion and celebrated like the others.
Government Kazi of Madurai A. Syed Khaja Mueenudeen said that the spirit of the festival was charity. People identified the needy people and provided essential commodities to them so that the poor also offered special prayers and celebrated with their family members. Food was also distributed to the needy people.
One part of the income should be spent on the needy people. Offering alms to the needy was a significant part of the celebrations, he said.
M. Mohammed Sameer, a resident of Puduthamaraipatti, said that after offering prayers in the morning, he celebrated the festival with friends and family. He invited his friends and relatives home for the celebrations and also exchanged food and sweets. He said that the festival was about togetherness and helping the needy. He and his friends distributed essential commodities to the needy people, he said.
