Dindigul Corporation removing flagpoles from public places as per Madras High Court orders, cost to be recovered from parties.
Dindigul Corporation has commenced removal of flagpoles installed in public places as per the orders of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court. The court in January had ordered the removal of flagpoles from public places.
The Corporation has identified over 250 flagpoles installed within its limits. After the inspection, the authorities have commenced the removal of the flagpoles.
The High Court had directed all political parties and community and religious organisations to remove permanent flagpoles erected by them at public places across Tamil Nadu be removed in 12 weeks. Otherwise, the authorities must remove these flagpoles by serving a two-week notice on those who had erected them.
After removing the flagpoles, the authorities should recover the cost of removal from the respective political parties and organisations. The authorities shall not grant permission for erecting flagpoles permanently at public places, the court said, adding that street corners and pavements were meant for public use. Therefore, no one had any right to erect flagpoles there.
