Demand rises for extended RoRo ferry service in Fort Kochi-Mattancherry corridor during peak tourist season.
The influx of visitors to Fort Kochi and Mattancherry during the peak tourist season has given rise to the demand that both the roll-on roll-off (ro-ro) ferries that conduct service in the Vypeen-Fort Kochi corridor operate trips at least till 11 p.m.
Vypeen-Fort Kochi Passengers’ Association president Francis Chammany petitioned the Chief Minister’s Office, District Collector, and the Kochi Corporation authorities, citing the need to extend the operating time of the second ro-ro ferry to 11 p.m., to cater to the mass of people visiting the two heritage sites from Kochi city and surrounding areas during the season. He added that this would also reduce the waiting time for passengers boarding the sole RoRo ferry, which operates till 11 p.m.
In addition, the container ro-ro ferry too must be deployed during evening peak hours in the Fort Kochi-Bolgatty corridor to meet the demand from both visitors and regular passengers.
An organiser of the Cochin Carnival said the demand for water transport, including both RoRo and ordinary ferries, had surged due to the ongoing festivities, as roads and bridges to West Kochi were heavily congested. “Ferries operated by the State Water Transport department [SWTD] have not called at the Mattancherry Jetty during the past five years. In this situation, the department should operate more services from the city and Vypeen to Fort Kochi,” he added.
Commuters have also been seeking more Water Metro ferries from the city to Fort Kochi.
Responding to the demands, sources in the Corporation said previous attempts to operate the container RoRo ferry and the Fort Queen ferry had not yielded the desired results. Moreover, the civic agency was badly in need of funds to repair Fort Queen, they added.
