The toll in the Anandapur warehouse fire in Kolkata rose to eight on Tuesday (January 27, 2026). Senior officials of the West Bengal Department of Fire and Emergency Services said a fire clearance certificate had not been obtained by the warehouse. About 18 people are still missing in the tragic incident.
“There was no fire clearance, [of] that we are certain. Rest will be found in further investigation. We will definitely file FIRs (First Information Reports) because there were violations,” Ranvir Kumar, Director General, West Bengal Department of Fire and Emergency Services, told mediapersons on Tuesday at the site of the tragedy.
Regular fire inspections and audits had been carried out, and they would follow all legal steps to bring justice, Mr. Kumar said.
The charred bodies of the deceased are yet to be identified. Family members of the deceased and missing people gathered at the site, looking for answers.
Fire and Emergency Services Minister Sujit Bose said that the Anandapur area was congested with multiple structures, and permissions for fire protection had not been obtained. “We will see if fire audits were conducted in this place. We conduct audits every month, but we cannot be certain right now if this place had a fire audit,” Mr. Bose said.
“We are not able to reach anyone. The person he used to work under is also unreachable,” a family member of a missing person said.
