CPI(M) Kannur district meet likely to witness heated debates

CPI(M) Kannur district meet likely to witness heated debates

CPI(M) district conference in Taliparamba to address controversies, criticisms, and internal challenges amid heightened political excitement.

As the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] district conference is set to begin in Taliparamba on Saturday (February 1), several controversies and criticisms surrounding the party in the district are expected to be discussed at the venue. The three-day conference, concluding on Monday (February 3), is taking place amid heightened political excitement and concerns among leaders and workers.

In a prelude to the conference, a flag procession and torch relay from three martyr memorials reached Taliparamba on Friday (January 31). The flag procession was inaugurated by senior CPI(M) leader P. Karunakaran and began from the Karivellur Martyrs Memorial. Similarly, Central Committee member E.P. Jayarajan inaugurated the flag post procession from the Kavumbai Martyrs Memorial. The torch relay from Avungampoil, Panniyur Karakkodi, and Trichambaram was inaugurated by Mattanur MLA K.K. Shailaja, Central Committee member P.K. Sreemathy, and district secretary M.V. Jayarajan, respectively. The procession culminated at Sitaram Yechury Nagar in the evening. Accompanied by a band, the flag was hoisted by organising welcome committee chairman T.K. Govindan.

The conference is likely to focus on key issues, including the controversy surrounding E.P. Jayarajan’s autobiography, allegations of party members meeting a BJP leader, the alleged suicide of ADM Naveen Babu, accusations against former Kannur district panchayat president P.P. Divya, and concerns over the lavish lifestyle of employees in certain cooperative institutions. Additionally, irregularities in the distribution of welfare pensions, the ongoing crisis in ration cards, and the role of DYFI workers in controversial rescue operations during the Nava Kerala March are expected to be raised during the meeting.

Discontent among party workers, especially in areas like Payyanur, where opposition against the local MLA has surfaced, adds to the tension. Furthermore, the party’s internal challenges—such as alcohol abuse among some members, the impact of breweries, and the reluctance of the younger generation to join the party—are likely to be key topics of debate.

With most controversies centred in Kannur, the presence of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan throughout the three-day conference, along with CPI (M) State Secretary M.V. Govindan, has intensified scrutiny. Reports suggest that some representatives may raise these concerns during the conference. Meanwhile, indications suggest that M.V. Jayarajan will continue as the district secretary.

The lack of women’s representation in leadership positions, which has drawn attention, will be discussed with Politburo member Brinda Karat.

Party leaders are expected to counter criticism by highlighting development initiatives at the district and State levels. However, comparisons between the first and second LDF governments, with claims of diminished effectiveness in the latter, may present another challenge for the leadership. With controversies looming large, the district conference is expected to be a crucial test for the CPI(M) leadership in Kannur.
