Centre gives nod to expand NH-44 between Dindigul and Samayanallur as six-lane road
In a significant move to bolster southern Tamil Nadu’s road infrastructure, the Union Government has officially initiated preliminary work to expand the National Highway 44 (NH-44) between Dindigul and Samayanallur from four lanes to six.
The announcement came from Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, following a formal request submitted by Madurai Member of Parliament Su. Venkatesan. The project aims to address the rapidly increasing traffic density on one of the State’s most vital transport arteries.
The Dindigul-Samayanallur stretch serves as a gateway for thousands of vehicles traveling from central and northern Tamil Nadu toward Madurai, Virudhunagar, and the deep south. Currently operating as a four-lane highway, the route has seen frequent bottlenecks and a rise in mishaps due to the sheer volume of commercial and passenger transit.
The MP had raised the necessity of this expansion in February 2025, highlighting the strain on the existing infrastructure. In a recent communique, Mr. Gadkari confirmed that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had been directed to move forward immediately.
“A detailed study was conducted regarding the conversion of the Dindigul – Samayanallur road into a six-lane highway,” he stated.
“I am happy to share that NHAI had been instructed to begin feasibility studies and prepare a Detailed Project Report.”
