Collector M. Pradeep Kumar inaugurated one such camp at the health and wellness centre at Gandhipuram in Tiruchi on Monday. The purpose of the camps is to screen people for breast cancer, cervical cancer, and oral cancer at the beginning stage and provide appropriate treatment for recovery. It aims at raising awareness about cancer and rehabilitation for cancer survivors.
District-level training sessions have been conducted for the woman health nurses (WHN) and they are engaged in a door-to-door awareness campaign to sensitise women and invite them to the screening camp. The initiative has been expanded to 164 health and wellness centres and 84 primary health centres in the district.
Mr. Kumar said people aged over 18 would be screened for oral cancer once a year and women aged over 30 would be screened for breast cancer and cervical cancer once in three years. On diagnosing symptoms, the patient would be referred to hospitals empanelled under the CM’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme.
Under the initiative, about 22.20 lakh people would be screened for oral cancer and 7.76 lakh women would be screened for breast and cervical cancer in the district. Steps are being taken to organise screening camps at government offices and industrial establishments, he added.
