Sri Bhagirath Jayanti celebration in Belagavi with colourful procession, speeches on significance, and flagging off by MPs.
Sri Bhagirath Jayanti was celebrated in Belagavi on Sunday.
A colourful procession started from Killa Durga Devi Mandir and went through the main streets of the city.
Resource persons spoke of the significance of the event and the contribution of Saint Bhagirath in a meeting held in the Kumar Gandharva Hall later.
MPs Jagadish Shettar and Iranna Kadadi flagged off the procession.
Resource person Mallikarjun Choukashi spoke about the story of Sage Bhagirath. He said that he had conducted strict penance to bring water to a parched Earth. He had pacified Lord Shiva and brought the Ganges to help all living beings.
He said that members of the Uppar community and several other communities deified him. He inspired generations of freedom fighters. There is a portrait of Sage Bhagirath in the original copy of the Constitution, the lawyer said.
He said that those engaged in salt trading were also considered members of the Uppar community.
