Archbishop Udumala Bala mourns the loss of Pope Francis, praising his humility, peace advocacy, and social justice efforts.
Archbishop Udumala Bala of Visakhapatnam expressed shock and grief at the demise of Pope Francis, calling it a great loss to the Church and society.
Pope Francis passed away at the age of 88 after battling a prolonged lung infection. He had been in critical condition in recent weeks.
Archbishop Bala recalled his association with the Pope and described him as a humble leader who transformed the image of the papacy. He noted that Pope Francis had transformed the traditional “royal image” of the papacy into one of simplicity, standing firmly for peace and justice. “He condemned war in the strongest possible words and consistently advocated peace in Ukraine-Russia and Israel-Palestine,” the Archbishop said.
He said that Pope Francis was the first South American and the first Jesuit to become the pontiff, known for his strong emphasis on social justice, humility, and compassion for the marginalised.
Archbishop Bala recalled that he was the first Indian bishop appointed by Pope Francis in 2013, and more recently, the Pope had also appointed him as the Archbishop of Visakhapatnam. “It was a special bond, and I feel pained at his demise,” he said.
Archbishop Bala extended heartfelt condolences to the Catholic world and prayed for the repose of Pope Francis’ soul.
