Andhra Assembly Speaker warns Jagan of action if he did not stop propaganda on his demand for LoP status

Speaker Mr. Ayyanna Patrudu said he received a letter from Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy on June 24, 2024 about conferring him LoP status and it was replete with accusations, speculative assertions, threats, and fallacious arguments aimed at asserting his sense of entitlement to be recognized as the LoP.
Taking strong objection to YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) President Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s demand that he be given Leader of the Opposition (LoP) status in the Assembly, Speaker Ch. Ayyanna Patrudu issued a ruling on Wednesday (March 5, 2025) that the former CM should put an end to his false propaganda forthwith or face action for creating ruckus over the issue while his petition in the High Court was still pending.
He stated that attributing motives to the Chair amounted to a breach of privilege and contempt of the House, and he was treating Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s diatribe with the contempt it deserved. He also said he was not sure if the House would tolerate any further/recurrence of such deplorable conduct.
Soon after the Assembly session began, Mr. Ayyanna Patrudu told the members that he received a letter from Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy on June 24, 2024 about conferring him LoP status and it was replete with accusations, speculative assertions, threats, and fallacious arguments aimed at asserting his sense of entitlement to be recognized as the LoP. However, the communication lacked any specific prayer.
Drawing the members’ attention to the contents of the said letter, and quoting from certain precedents related to the norms that govern the recognition of a leader as LoP, Mr. Ayyanna Patrudu said Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s unreasonable desire could not be considered. He mainly pointed out that only the leader of a party which has at least 18 seats in the Assembly could be given LoP status, where YSRCP has only 11 MLAs including Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy.
Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar requested the Speaker to refer the matter to the Assembly Privileges Committee for necessary action, while Minister of Law and Justice N. Md. Farooq suggested that the members could decide the course of action against Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy on their own.
