The child marriage came to light when a family member uploaded the wedding photos on a social media group, officials said
The Pedana police registered a case against a bridegroom and his family members on a charge of performing a child marriage. The bride, a minor studying in Class 9 in Krishna district, was married two days ago to a man aged about 30, a native of Challapalli in the same district.
The marriage came to light when a family member uploaded the wedding photographs on a social media group, District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) officials said. On receiving information, the DCPU staff and an Anganwadi worker rescued the girl and produced her before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC).
“Based on the complaint lodged by the Women Development and Child Welfare (WD&CW) department officials, we registered a case,” Machilipatnam Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Dharmendra said.
“The Pedana police registered a ‘Zero FIR’ and transferred the case to Challapalli police, where the wedding was performed,” Mr. Dharmendra told The Hindu on Friday (April 10, 2026).
The girl was sent to a Child Care Institution for care and protection, the WD&CW department officers said. The police are investigating.
