Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has achieved a major milestone in property tax collection by collecting ₹149.68 crore tax as against the tax demand of ₹112 crore, thereby achieving the target by 133.64% for the year 2025-26.
MCC Commissioner Ravichandra Naik told reporters here on Friday, that the tax collection, tax demand and achievement in the previous years had been ₹137.03 crore, ₹108 crore and 126.88% in 2024-25, ₹117.03 crore, ₹99.84 crore and 117.21% in 2023-24 and ₹94.59 crore, ₹84.85 crore and 111.47% for 2022-23, respectively.
The increase in tax collection, according to Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) K. Akshata, was not just because of the 3% increase in the base tax rate; but mainly because of diligent follow up and random surveys of properties. Officials found out many instances of lesser extents of properties shown in self-assessment returns. Updating the measurements to the actual extent has helped to net in more revenues, she said.
Mr. Naik said the Corporation has been undertaking pilot survey of properties in three wards, Attavara, Hampanakatte and Padavu wards. An additional ₹55.53 lakh property tax was collected from these wards even as the survey was still in progress. The Corporation was hopeful of collecting at least ₹3 crore additional tax once the survey gets completed in these wards.
The civic body is further hopeful of collecting more revenues following the Deputy Commissioner as the Administrator of the Corporation has earmarked funds in the Budget to undertake property survey across the City, he said.
As every year, property owners may pay the tax before April 31 to avail 5% rebate for the year 2026-27, the Commissioner added.
