Hyderabad airport upgrades primary runway with Category II ILS for safer landings in low visibility

Hyderabad's RGIA’s primary runway was upgraded to Category II ILS to improve landing safety in low visibility, enhancing operational efficiency and reliability.
Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) has enhanced its operational efficiency and safety with the successful installation of a Category II Instrument Landing System (ILS) on its primary runway. This upgrade from Category I ILS will allow aircrafts to land safely even in reduced visibility conditions, improving reliability during adverse weather.
The Category II ILS provides precise guidance to pilots using highly accurate radio signals and advanced runway lighting systems, enabling landings in visibility as low as 300 meters Runway Visual Range (RVR). This marks an improvement from the previous Category I system, which required better visibility for safe operations. The upgrade is particularly beneficial during foggy conditions, ensuring fewer disruptions and smoother flight schedules, the airport authorities said.
The authorities said that additionally, the airport’s second runway has been approved by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for an upgrade to Category I status. This enhancement will allow operations in visibility conditions as low as 550 meters RVR, ensuring greater flexibility and contingency support in case of disruptions on the primary runway.
“The implementation of these advanced navigational systems represents a significant milestone in GMR Hyderabad International airport’s technological infrastructure development. This enhancement substantially elevates our operational parameters while ensuring adherence to the highest safety standards in aviation operations,” said Pradeep Panicker, CEO of GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited.
The new systems, compliant with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) specifications, have received all necessary certifications from the DGCA. The improved landing system is expected to minimize delays, enhance passenger convenience, and reinforce GMR Hyderabad International Airport’s position as a key hub for both domestic and international flights.
