BJP aims for a breakthrough in Karaikal by contesting three constituencies, signaling increased confidence and strategic ambition.
The BJP, which is yet to secure an Assembly victory in Karaikal district, is seeking to achieve a breakthrough in this election by contesting three of the five constituencies, up from its usual one or two seats in previous polls, signalling growing organisational ambition and confidence in the region.
As part of the N.R. Congress-led NDA in Puducherry, the BJP is contesting Karaikal North and Neravy–T.R. Pattinam against DMK candidates, while taking on the Congress in Thirunallar.
“People want some change,” BJP State spokesperson M. Arulmurugan said, claiming that public enthusiasm during recent visit by Union Home Minister Amit Shah had indicated growing support for the party in the district.
The expansion marks a notable shift in the BJP’s strategy in Karaikal. In the 2021 Assembly election, contesting as part of the N.R. Congress-led alliance, the party finished second in two constituencies, losing Thirunallar by 1,380 votes and Neravy–T.R. Pattinam by 5,511 votes. Party functionaries described the Thirunallar result as a “near miss” and said sustained booth-level work since then had strengthened its prospects.
The contrast with earlier elections is stark. In 2016, the BJP contested all five seats independently and lost in all of them. In 2011, it contested only one seat and lost. The party has not recorded a win in any constituency in Karaikal over the past decade.
The BJP’s campaign this time is centred on the development plank. Mr. Arulmurugan credited the party and its alliance with pushing infrastructure works, including drinking water projects under the Jal Jeevan Mission, pipeline repairs, and road connectivity improvements. He also claimed that key projects, including the Vilipulam–Nagapattinam highway, had been sanctioned following intervention by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, and said improved connectivity had reduced travel time between Karaikal and Puducherry.
