Sewage stagnation at Government Medical College and Hospital in Thoothukudi raises health concerns
The sewage overflow and stagnation on the premises of the Thoothukudi Government Medical College and Hospital (TKGMCH) has irked the public as it poses serious health hazard.
Sewage has been stagnating near the mortuary for more than 10 days along the Chidambara Nagar gate of the hospital. This has affected patients and visitors who enter the hospital through this gate.
D. Raja, district executive committee member CPI(M), said that the situation has remained unchanged for the past two weeks, with no action taken to address the issue. He added that a significant number of people use this gate on a daily basis, as it is located close to the mortuary and children’s ward.
Sources from the hospital administration said that multiple complaints have been submitted to the Public Works Department (PWD) regarding the issue, but no permanent action has been taken.
“Regarding the current sewage stagnation near the Chidambara Nagar gate, we have been reaching the PWD officials for over 10 days, but no action has been taken so far,” the source added.
He further noted that this has been a recurring issue at TKGMCH, affecting various locations within the premises. However PWD has been focusing only on temporary measures to clear blockages and resolve related issues, rather than implementing permanent solutions, he alleged.
