Parthiban’s Iravin Nizhal wins the Special Jury award; Ra. Venkat’s Kida wins Best Feature Film award
Vijay Sethupathi and ‘Poo’ Ramu (posthumous) won the Best Actor for male for their role in Mamanithan and Kida respectively. Actor Sai Pallavi won the Best Actor award for female in the lead role for her performance in the critically acclaimed Gargi at the closing ceremony of the 20th edition of the Chennai International Film Festival on Thursday at PVR-Sathyam cinemas in Chennai.
Organised by the Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation since 2003, the film festival has a competition section for Tamil films, which has been expanded to eight awards this year.
Filmmaker Ra. Venkat said: “This is my first film and I feel this is a big recognition for me. We started as a small film and I kept saying that we should send it to film festivals. I thank my producer and my team.”
Vijay Sethupathi said: “Life’s experiences become movies. A director presents a perspective through actors. Please try to understand a film – it is important for film students and try to indulge in good, healthy discussions. A two-and-a-hour movie can tell the story of a man who has lived 50 years. Don’t try to understand a film through reviews (popular reviews on social media).” He said that Mamanithan tells the story of ordinary people.
Actor R. Parthiban’s Iravin Nizhal won the Special Jury award while Ka. Sa. Da. Thapara won the second Best Film of the Tamil film competition section.
Filmmaker Ra. Venkat’s Kida won the Best Feature Film award.
Anthony BJ Ruban, C.S. Prem Kumar and Arthur Wilson won the Best Sound ( Natchathiram Nagargiradhu), Best Editing (Beginning) and Best Cinematography (Iravin Nizhal) respectively. A special award was given to film Aadhar.
“We are judges and therefore, cannot act like Mughals of a bygone era ... the writ courts in the guise of doing justice cannot transcend the barriers of law,” the High Court of Karnataka observed while setting aside an order of a single judge, who in 2016 had extended the lease of a public premises allotted to a physically challenged person to 20 years contrary to 12-year period stipulated in the law.
The High Court of Karnataka on Monday declined to interfere, at present, in the investigation against a Bharatiya Janata Party worker, who is among the accused persons facing charges of circulating obscene clips, related to “morphed” images and videos clips related to Prajwal Revanna, former Hassan MP, in public domain through pen drives and other modes.
The 16th edition of Bhoomi Habba was held on June 8, at the Visthar campus.
