Tirunelveli SP designates a policeman for every village to collect intelligence inputs and for effective timely action
In a bid to strengthen the bond between the Department of Police and the villagers in crime prevention and detection, Superintendent of Police V. Prassannakumar has designated one policeman to every village in the district, who can be reached by the villagers anytime to share any sensitive information they have with him for timely and appropriate action.
While inaugurating the ‘Makkalai Thaedi Kaaval’ scheme at Mela Thaazhaiyoothu on the city outskirts on Thursday, he said the designated policemen would visit the villages allotted to them at least thrice a week to understand the law and order issues and grievances of individuals, if any, and gather information relevant to law and order and crime prevention.
The information gathered by the policemen from the villagers would be immediately documented and shared with the higher-ups including the Superintendent of Police, who would take appropriate action to prevent or detect the crimes. The documented information would also be used for future reference.
“We, the Tirunelveli District Police, enjoy excellent rapport with the public, who always help the police in maintaining law and order. This initiative, christened ‘Gramathu Kaaval’, (Village Policing) would further strengthen this bond and encourage the citizen of every village, especially women and the students to inform the police if they happen to face any problems from unlawful elements,” he said.
The name and phone number of the designated policeman and the ‘Ungaludan SP’ phone number (94981 01740) would be installed in the villages.
He also said the police was keen on installing CCTV cameras in every village in the district within next 90 days as this arrangement would discourage the anti-social elements from committing crime while helping the police in crime prevention and crack the crimes.
