Panic buying ensues in Erode as fuel shortage rumors spark long queues, despite sufficient supplies at most stations.
Rumours about a possible fuel shortage triggered panic buying among motorists in parts of the district on Friday, prompting many vehicle users to purchase petrol and diesel in cans and containers.
At several fuel stations, motorists arrived carrying plastic cans and other containers, fearing that supplies might run out in the coming days. The sudden rush led to long queues at a few outlets, where customers reportedly waited for over 30 minutes to refill their vehicles and storage containers.
However, the situation remained largely normal at most fuel stations across the district. Staff at several outlets said that the regular supply of fuel had not been disrupted and that stocks were adequate to meet the demand.
They also said there had been no official announcement regarding any shortage of petrol or diesel in the district and attributed the temporary rush at a few outlets to rumours circulating among the public. Fuel station operators appealed to motorists not to panic and advised them to purchase fuel only as required.
