Supporters of the May 17 Movement defaced Hindi letters on the railway signage at Singanallur railway station in Coimbatore on March 12, 2026 (Thursday).
According to the organisation, Hindi letters were defaced as part of intensifying its protest against Hindi imposition in Tamil Nadu.
The protesters used black spray paints to deface the station’s name in Hindi on multiple signboards. They also raised slogans accusing the Union government of indulging in Hindi imposition in the State, said police sources.
Upendra Kumar, Inspector of the Railway Protection Force, said the protest took place between 10.30 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Thursday. Six to eight persons were alleged to have been involved in the protest.
“A case has been registered against the protesters under different Sections of the Railways Act. Further investigation is under way,” he said.
