Designed for IMAX, Project Hail Mary initially saw limited shows in India as Dhurandhar 2 held screens. However, additional shows were added following the online backlash.
Did Project Hail Mary miss IMAX glory in India as Dhurandhar 2 holds screens? Ryan Gosling may be floating through deep space in Project Hail Mary, but in India, his film is struggling to find room where it matters most – IMAX screens. Here's the truth.
The much-anticipated sci-fi drama, designed and shot for the premium large format, finally released in Indian theatres on March 26, 2026, a week after its global debut.
As per advance bookings, despite its visual ambition, the film has landed only a handful of IMAX shows across the country, with most premium screens still dominated by Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar: The Revenge. Ironically, that very canvas remains largely out of reach for Indian audiences. The result? A growing sense of frustration among cinegoers who were hoping to experience the film the way it was meant to be seen.
After last-minute negotiations, Sony Pictures managed to secure limited IMAX slots for Project Hail Mary. As of yesterday, screenings were available only in select cities, including Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata and Coimbatore. Notably, Delhi-NCR, home to seven IMAX screens, did not feature a single show for the film on its opening day.
However, the situation shifted slightly, with more IMAX shows added in Delhi-NCR on Thursday.
