KSU activists protest at Kerala Secretariat over student brutalization, clash with police, leading to arrests and traffic diversions.
Scores of Kerala Students Union (KSU) activists attempted to besiege the government Secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday (February 17, 2025) protesting against the “brutalisation” of a student of the Government College of Nursing in Kottayam recently.
The police fired water cannons several times to deter the KSU activists from rushing at the law enforcement barricades in front of the gates. Individuals on both sides sustained minor injuries during the scuffle. The police also repelled KSU activists who attempted to enter the Secretariat premises by climbing the perimeter fence.
Later, the police arrested and removed numerous KSU workers who staged a sit-in protest.
The protest on the main thoroughfare forced the police to divert traffic from the Secretariat area, prompting motorists to take detours and cutting off citizens from the locality for hours.
The KSU had previously accused a Students Federation of India (SFI) affiliate in the Kottayam nursing college of ragging a student. The SFI has denied the accusation and pointed out that it has no unit in the college.
The KSU also accused the nursing college staff of ignoring “routine mistreatment” of junior students in the hostel.
