Nitish Kumar heads to Delhi amid speculation he may resign as Bihar CM after taking oath as a Rajya Sabha member.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Janata Dal (United) working president Sanjay Kumar Jha left for Delhi on Thursday (April 9, 2026) amid reports that he could take oath as a Rajya Sabha member on Friday (April 10).
Mr. Kumar is expected to meet top Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in Delhi before returning to Patna either on April 11 or the next day. He is likely to address a meeting of NDA legislators on April 13 and hold what could be his last Cabinet meeting as Chief Minister. Following that, he may resign from his post.
Bihar’s Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav took a jibe over the political developments in the State alleging that the BJP and the JD(U) are busy playing “musical chairs” over the Chief Minister’s post.
The BJP may name its first Chief Minister in Bihar after April 14, and the new government may take oath at a function in the Raj Bhawan within a day or two, a senior BJP leader said. Most Ministers are expected to retain their portfolios.
The BJP is said to have called a meeting of the party’s core committee leaders in Delhi on April 10 to discuss the transition of power in Bihar and the new Chief Minister of the State.
