Kerala Assembly Elections 2026: High turnout fuels tight contest in Thrissur

High voter turnout of 77.06% in Thrissur sets the stage for a fiercely contested 2026 Kerala Assembly election.
A closely fought contest is on the cards in Thrissur district, where a robust 77.06% voter turnout has set the stage for a nail-biting finish in the Assembly elections.
The turnout marks a 3.37 percentage point rise from the 73.69% recorded in 2021, with polling increasing across all 13 constituencies—an indicator, political observers say, of greater participation by neutral voters.
While the primary battle remains between the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF), several constituencies witnessed triangular contests involving the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), adding layers of complexity to the outcome.
Parties are now closely analysing a mix of socio-political and religious factors that could prove decisive in a district known for its diverse electorate and shifting loyalties. Historically, higher polling has often been linked to increased participation by undecided voters—votes that all fronts are now claiming.
Turnout patterns in Thrissur have varied over the years. The district recorded 77.99% in 2016 and 73.69% in 2021—both elections that saw sweeping victories for the LDF, which won 12 of the 13 seats. The 2024 Lok Sabha election saw a turnout of 72.96%, while the local body polls in December recorded 72.27%, according to available figures upto 8 p.m.
This time, turnout rose across constituencies: Wadakkanchery (79.53%) and Ollur (79.60%) led the chart, followed by Puthukkad (78.80%) and Chelakkara (78.79%). Guruvayur recorded the lowest turnout at 72.78%. The turnout recorded at other constituencies: Kunnamkulam (76.63%); Manalur (75.89%); Thrissur (75.68%); Nattika (76.37%); Kaipamangalam (76.69%); Irinjalakuda (76.72%); Chalakudy (75.22%); and Kodungallur (77.56%).
