The Nagercoil-Charlapalli Amrit Bharat Weekly Express receives a warm welcome in Thanjavur during its inaugural journey.
Rail users and users association representatives accorded a warm reception to the Nagercoil-Charlapalli Amrit Bharat Weekly Express Train at Kumbakonam on Friday on its maiden run from Nagercoil to Charlapalli near Hyderabad.
According to sources, the newly-introduced train arrived at Kumbakonam Railway Station on Friday much to the joy of rail users. Since the completion of gauge conversion in the main line, passengers of delta region have been demanding direct train to Hyderabad.
Their request to extend Tambaram-Kacheguda Express to Tiruchi and routing the Madurai-Kachiguda Express through the main line were not conceded by the Railways. When a proposal for extending Tambaram-Hyderabad Express to Nagercoil was made by South- Central Railway, main line passengers requested that it be operated in their route but the extension was kept in abeyance due to some protest, according to Thanjavur District Railway Users Association Secretary A. Giri.
A weekly special train between Rameswaram and Secunderabad operated through Thanjavur was abruptly stopped in 2022 despite good patronage. In 2024, TANDRUA members along with the State BJP Secretary Karuppu Muruganandam met Railway Minister in 2024 and reiterated the demand for delta-Hyderabad train connectivity. Consequently, special trains between Kanniyakumari and Hyderabad and Madurai-Kachiguda were operated through the main line and recently the Railway Board has approved permanent operation of these trains with an extension of Kacheguda Express to Thoothukudi. Regular run of these trains is expected to commence soon, he said.
Meantime, a new Amrit Bharat Weekly Express between Nagercoil and Charlapalli (near Secunderabad) which was flagged off by the Prime Minister on Wednesday, commenced its maiden journey to Charlapalli from Nagercoil on Thursday.
On its arrival at Kumbakonam on Friday morning, loco inspector Issakimuthu, loco pilots Nataraj and Alex were honoured by TANDRUA secretary, DRUCC member and Papanasam Train Passengers Association secretary T. Saravanan, and Federation of Kumbakonam All Trade and Industrial Associations secretary V. Sathiyanarayanan.
