The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) will conduct a detailed inspection of the ancient gopuram (temple tower) at Nagalapuram temple in the first week of February.
The initiative follows a request from the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), which currently manages the temple. The inspection will be carried out under the supervision of ASI Director (Epigraphy) K. Muniratnam Reddy.
Located close to 65km from Tirupati, the temple is known for its historical and architectural significance. Though less frequented than major pilgrimage centres in the district, the temple forms part of a wider network of heritage shrines under the administrative control of TTD.
The ASI team will be accompanied by two eminent experts in the field of heritage conservation — Satyamurthy, former Director of Archaeology, and Dhakshinamurthy, a senior ‘Stapati’ from Tamil Nadu — and their expertise is expected to provide a comprehensive assessment of the gopuram’s structural integrity, stylistic lineage and conservation requirements in line with established heritage norms.
Reports suggest that the temple complex represents a rare blend of traditional Dravidian architectural elements. The team will also identify measures for technical evaluation, scientific preservation, restoration and long-term protection of the structure.
The initiative is also believed to underscore the role of institutional coordination between heritage bodies and temple administrations in protecting historically significant religious structures.

Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy said here on Tuesday that the police will consider booking those causing death by drink and drive, and by allowing minors to drive, for the offence of culpable homicide (not amounting to murder). They are also contemplating barricading highway medians across the commissionerate to dissuade pedestrians from jaywalking, he said.
