Anora's Original Screenplay win at the 2025 Writers Guild Awards boosts its Oscar campaign for Best Picture.
The 2025 Writers Guild Awards delivered another major boost to Anora‘s Oscar campaign, as the film clinched the award for Original Screenplay on Saturday night. The win cements its status as a frontrunner for Best Picture at the upcoming Academy Awards.
Sean Baker’s critically acclaimed drama triumphed over A Real Pain, Challengers, Civil War, and My Old Ass in the highly competitive category. This victory adds to Anora’s already impressive awards season run, having previously won the top honors at the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and Producers Guild of America (PGA) Awards. Notably, the only film to sweep the DGA, PGA, and WGA awards without taking home Best Picture at the Oscars was Brokeback Mountain, making Anora’s trajectory all the more promising.
Meanwhile, Nickel Boys took home the prize for Adapted Screenplay, beating out A Complete Unknown, Dune: Part Two, Hit Man, and Wicked. On the television side, Shōgun won for Drama Series, while Hacks reclaimed its spot as the top Comedy Series.
With the Oscar race in full swing, Anora‘s latest victory only solidifies its momentum. While the WGA Awards don’t always align perfectly with the Academy’s picks, history suggests that Baker’s script stands a strong chance of making it all the way to Hollywood’s biggest night.
